The work entitled "The North American Indian" by Edward S. Curtis was issued in twenty volumes in a limited edition from 1907 to 1930, with a foreword by Theodore Roosevelt. This famous and often controversial publication, with its more than 2,000 photogravure plates, is one of the most important and influential representations of traditional Native American culture ever produced. In these volumes Curtis sought to document the traditional dress, life, customs, and manners of the peoples he visited. Curtis's photographs portray eighty tribes, representing traditional Native American cultures of the Great Plains, Plateau Region, Southwest, California, Pacific Northwest, and Alaska. These striking images, many quite well-known, have been influential in shaping popular views of "Indians." They have been criticized by some -- because Curtis was not an ethnographer, because many of his photos are posed or lack context, and because the work contributed to the mythologizing of Native Americans as a "vanishing race." But they continue to be admired as well, and they remain compelling for both their historical interest and their artistic merit. This collection of photographs is a classic in anthropology as well as in the history of documentary photography. Along with numerous portraits of men, women, and children, the collection also includes images depicting traditional activities, rituals and ritual attire (including masks), and examples of material culture (baskets, pottery, boats, clothing and footwear, and traditional shelter including pueblos and tipis.) and the environment (desert, canyons, Plains, lakes, marshes, etc.) Our original compilation is organized in twenty "albums"
identified by the tribe names used by Curtis. Cultures represented
